When coercing means fitting: distributional modeling of psycholinguistic datasets

چکیده
Type clash and coercion in logical metonymy Logical metonymy (begin the book → begin writing the book) has traditionally been accounted for by means of type-shift: according to these theories (Pustejovsky 1995), the type clash between the event-selecting verb (begin) and the entity-denoting object (book) triggers a coercion mechanism that shifts the type of the object into an event (book → writing the book). The preferred interpretation (reading / writing) is retrieved from complex lexical entries (qualia) associated with the object. Many psycholinguistic studies have sought for behavioral correlates of the coercion mechanism. Some of the main findings were:

Fitting, Not Clashing! A Distributional Semantic Model of Logical Metonymy
compute thematic fit for pairs relying only on distributional information (no information about semantic types) compare thematic fit differences across conditions and processing cost differences (high processing cost → low thematic fit, corresponding to 1-thematic fit in the model) verify if the computational model yields the same main effects and pairwise differences reported by t...
متن کاملComposing and Updating Verb Argument Expectations: A Distributional Semantic Model
The aim of this paper is to present a computational model of the dynamic composition and update of verb argument expectations using Distributional Memory, a state-of-the-art framework for distributional semantics. The experimental results conducted on psycholinguistic data sets show that the model is able to successfully predict the changes on the patient argument thematic fit produced by diffe...
متن کاملPEDOMODELS FITTING WITH FUZZY LEAST SQUARES REGRESSION
Pedomodels have become a popular topic in soil science and environmentalresearch. They are predictive functions of certain soil properties based on other easily orcheaply measured properties. The common method for fitting pedomodels is to use classicalregression analysis, based on the assumptions of data crispness and deterministic relationsamong variables. In modeling natural systems such as s...
متن کاملA Flexible Modeling Approach Using Dirichlet Process Mixtures: Application to Multilevel Railway Grade Crossing Crash Data
This paper introduces a new approach to addressing two of the most challenging issues in transportation safety research, namely, how to account for unobserved heterogeneity and how to identify latent subpopulations in data. Compared to the approaches of applying random effects/parameters models and finite mixtures, the proposed approach employs a Bayesian semi-parametric methodology based on Di...
متن کاملMarble Algorithm: a solution to estimating ecological niches from presence-only records
We describe an algorithm that helps to predict potential distributional areas for species using presence-only records. The Marble Algorithm is a density-based clustering program based on Hutchinson's concept of ecological niches as multidimensional hypervolumes in environmental space. The algorithm characterizes this niche space using the density-based spatial clustering of applications with no...
